Fighting Back Against Attacks On Patients’ Rights

Every year in Iowa, doctor and hospital interest groups along with medical malpractice insurance carriers have pushed efforts in the Iowa legislature to take away or severely limit the rights of patients to pursue justice in our courts. For over a decade, attorney Brian P. Galligan has been a member of the Iowa Association for Justice Legislative Committee and has made numerous trips to Capitol Hill to lobby and to fight for the rights of patients and their families injured or killed by medical malpractice.

Mr. Galligan has been deeply involved in negotiating many changes to medical malpractice law in Iowa that have managed to pass, ensuring that patients’ rights were protected to the maximum extent possible. Legislators have regularly looked to Mr. Galligan as a thoughtful, smart, well-prepared, effective voice for people harmed through medical malpractice in Iowa. Galligan Law is on the front lines on behalf of Iowans’ rights to safety and justice in the health care industry.

Advocacy In The Iowa Legislature For Travelers On Our Streets And Highways

Every year in Iowa, insurance companies, business interests and industries push efforts in the Iowa legislature to take away or severely limit the rights of injured Iowans to pursue justice and hold negligent drivers fully accountable in our courts.

For over a decade, attorney Brian P. Galligan has been a member of the Iowa Association for Justice Legislative Committee. In this capacity, he has made countless trips to the Iowa State Capitol to lobby and to fight for the rights of Iowans and their families who are injured or killed because of careless driving.

Mr. Galligan has been deeply involved in stopping bad legislation and negotiating positive changes to Iowa law that protects victims of negligence and allows for full and fair compensation for the harms they’ve suffered. Legislators have regularly looked to Mr. Galligan as a thoughtful, smart, well-prepared, effective voice for injured Iowans.

Example Of Legislative Lobbying Results: Expanded Eligibility For Wrongful Death Claims

In 2007, Brian P. Galligan was instrumental in getting Iowa law changed to allow parents to recover damages for their losses resulting from the death of a child over the age of 18 (known as adult child consortium). Prior to that change, parents whose child was killed by negligence could only recover damages for the period of time when the child was a minor.

Mr. Galligan was given the Iowa Association for Justice Key Person Award for his efforts. In June 2016, he obtained a verdict that included $2 million dollars for parents whose 19-year-old son was wrongfully killed in a motor vehicle collision, a verdict that would not have been possible for those parents without the changes to Iowa law in 2007.
