Example Of Legislative Lobbying Results: Expanded Eligibility For Wrongful Death Claims
In 2007, Brian P. Galligan was instrumental in getting Iowa law changed to allow parents to recover damages for their losses resulting from the death of a child over the age of 18 (known as adult child consortium). Prior to that change, parents whose child was killed by negligence could only recover damages for the period of time when the child was a minor.
Mr. Galligan was given the Iowa Association for Justice Key Person Award for his efforts. In June 2016, he obtained a verdict that included $2 million dollars for parents whose 19-year-old son was wrongfully killed in a motor vehicle collision, a verdict that would not have been possible for those parents without the changes to Iowa law in 2007.
