One injured in Iowa City crash due to icy roads

Drivers in Iowa often encounter various weather conditions while traveling on the roadways across the state. During the winter months, this often means the dreaded snow and ice on the roadways. Inclement weather such as a snowstorm, sleet and freezing rain could cause dangerous road conditions. While in some cases residents should avoid driving at all during hazardous weather, those who must travel on the roadways should take extreme caution in order to avoid car accidents.

Authorities in Iowa City were recently dispatched to an accident site on Interstate 80 in the westbound lanes. According to preliminary reports, the accident involved a van and a semi-truck. The two vehicles collided around 11:30 a.m. and caused traffic to be delayed and backed up due to only one lane being open.

Because the roads were very slick, police officers believe that weather played a huge factor in the crash that caused the van to be lodged under the side of the semi-truck. The van driver was injured in the accident and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

Investigation is still ongoing, and the condition of the van driver is unknown at this time. Once the accident investigation is complete, it may be possible to establish cause and liability. In cases where dangerous road conditions caused by weather, accident investigators will determine if a driver was negligent, for example, by traveling too fast for conditions. If a negligent driver is at fault and they caused injuries and damages in the crash, they could be liable for the losses incurred by the victim.

The victim could pursue a personal injury suit in order to seek compensation. The monetary award could be used to alleviate financial burdens associated to the accident, such as medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages and other related damages.

Whether it is icy roads, high winds or heavy rain, drivers should always be aware how weather could affect driving conditions on the roadway. Failure to do so could cause an accident involving serious injuries and severe damages.
