Iowa man arrested following fatal motorcycle hit-and-run

An unsafe driver is a very dangerous factor to have on the roadways. Although authorities seek to suspend or revoke the licenses of negligent drivers in order to keep them off the roads, these drivers still travel on the roadway either without a license or when it is reinstated. A driver with a serious driving record could easily be at fault in a collision resulting in injuries and even death.

Following a fatal hit-and-run in Knoxville, authorities in Iowa arrested a Monroe man for vehicular homicide. According to reports, the accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 14 and G44. Officers believe that a 20-year-old motorcyclist was traveling north on Highway 14 when they slowed down to make a turn. The pickup truck traveling behind the motorcyclist failed to slow down and collided with the rear of the bike.

Emergency crews pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene of the accident. In addition, it was reported that the driver of the pickup truck left the scene following the crash but was later located due to a tip made by a member of the public.

The driver was charged with an OWI and vehicular homicide. It was reported that this is the driver's third OWI. The driver could face serious criminal penalties for causing the fatal motorcycle accident and could also endure civil liabilities. The loved ones of the deceased could recover compensation through a wrongful death claim. This could provide them with a monetary award to cover funeral expenses, lost wages and related damages.

The loss of a loved one is a difficult event to cope with, especially when a negligent driver suddenly took their life away from them. There are several options available to the family members of the deceased but there is a timeframe in which a civil action could be filed. In order to ensure they understand their rights and filing a claim timely, loved ones should seek advice about their situation and legal remedies available.
