Fatal motorcycle crash in Iowa City

During the summer months, residents in Iowa often see an increase in motorcycles on the roadway. These small vehicles are able to maneuver quickly and could easily go undetected, due to the blind spots of larger vehicles. Whether it is during the daytime or nighttime hours, drivers should always be aware of their surroundings. That also means keeping an eye out for motorcyclists. Double-checking before making a turn or lane change could reduce the chances of a motorcycle accident.

Authorities were recently dispatched to a fatal motorcycle crash in Iowa City. The accident involved a motorcycle driven by a 50-year-old man and an automobile driven by an 18-year-old female. The incident occurred during the night on Highway 1 West, near the 1600 block.

According to reports, the accident happened when the motorcyclist was struck from behind by the young motorist. When emergency crews arrived at the scene, the biker was pronounced dead. Authorities noted that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but that form of protection did not prevent him from suffering fatal injuries.

Investigation is still ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time. The driver at fault could face traffic, criminal and civil penalties. The loved ones of the deceased could suffer greatly due to their losses. In order to cover the expenses associated with the crash, they could file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver at fault. This could result in a monetary award that could be used to cover funeral costs, damages, lost wages and pain and suffering.

A fatal crash could happen suddenly, and even when safety precautions are taken, unsuspecting motorcyclists could lose their life at the hands of a negligent driver. In these matters, loved ones are often dealing with the financial and emotional upset the incident caused. In order to help alleviate these burdens, establishing whether they have a cause of action could prove to be very beneficial.
