Addressing the high rate of fatal truck crashes in Iowa

The trucking industry is important to residents across the nation. Drivers in Iowa will often cross paths with several large trucks while traveling on various roadways during their daily commutes. These massive vehicles are responsible for making large shipments across the city, state, region or nation. Although very useful and heavily relied upon, trucks could be the source of a serious or even fatal collision on the roadways. Tractor-trailers and semi-trucks are not as easy to maneuver like other vehicles. Furthermore, they have large blind spots. When a driver is negligent or fatigued, this could cause driver error and a truck crash could occur.

Following a recent semi-truck accident at the interchange at Interstate 380 and Interstate 80 in Cedar Rapids, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistic were cited. According to their reports, large trucks account for 13.2 percent of the fatal accidents in the state of Iowa. Moreover, this rate is one of the highest in the country.

These high rates have caused further research to be initiated to understand the reasons for such high rates in the state. Possible reasons have not been reported at this time, but the importance of discovering a cause was stressed.

When a truck accident occurs, it is more likely than not that the other vehicle involved will be severely damaged. Furthermore, those traveling inside the other vehicle will often suffer serious injuries and could even die as a result.

Following a fatal truck accident, it is important that loved ones understand what options are available to them. In some cases, a negligent driver caused the crash, and that driver could face civil liabilities. Loved ones of the deceased could file a wrongful death claim against the driver. This could provide them with compensation to cover medical bills, funeral costs, damages and pain and suffering.

The aftermath of a truck accident could be tragic. It could also result in serious injuries, deaths and numerous financial burdens. An injured party or family members of the deceased could seek legal remedies for the losses and damages caused by the truck accident.
