Two-year-old girl struck and killed in Iowa motel parking lot

The roadways are often the stage for tragedy. A negligent or distracted driver could easily collide with another vehicle, bicyclist or pedestrians. Whether a driver is traveling on an interstate, city streets, residential areas or a parking lot, they should always uphold a certain standard of care while they are behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. Failure to do so could result in a serious or fatal accident.

Authorities in Iowa were recently dispatched to the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash. The accident took place around 9:30 p.m. in a motel parking lot in Burlington. Reports indicate that the 34-year-old driver struck a two-year-old girl who was in the parking lot. She was transported to the hospital for medical treatment but she did not survive the injuries she suffered.

Officers stated that the driver of the vehicle initially fled the scene of the accident but later returned. He was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. Investigation is still ongoing and authorities are seeking to understand cause. It wasn't reported whether alcohol was a factor.

In addition to facing criminal penalties, the driver could also endure civil liabilities in this automobile accident. The loved ones of the young girl could file a wrongful death suit. In order to offset the expenses and damages caused by the tragic incident, compensation could be awarded to cover medical bills, funeral costs and pain and suffering.

The loss of a loved one can be an emotional and devastating event. This is especially true when a young child is sudden killed by a negligent driver. Establishing early on whether a cause of action is available could help loved ones timely file a claim. Furthermore, it could lessen the time it takes to receive compensation. Obtaining guidance from a legal professional can put the entire process in perspective while also ensuring the protection of their rights and interests.
