Yaz Yasmin

Side Effects From Yaz or Yasmin Birth Control?

Thousands of women who have taken the oral contraceptives Yaz or Yasmin have died or experienced blood clots and other life-threatening side effects. Class action lawsuits on behalf of those who were harmed allege that the manufacturer knew of the serious health risks but failed to give adequate warning.

If you or a family member suffered serious or lasting harm after taking Yaz or Yasmin birth control pills, the Des Moines law firm of Galligan Reid PC can review your case to determine if you may qualify to seek compensation. We serve as Iowa counsel in mass tort litigation against Bayer HealthCare, the pharmaceutical giant that marketed Yasmin and Yaz, and national chains that distributed and sold the popular contraceptives.

Iowa Yasmin Lawsuit and Yaz Lawsuit Attorneys

Yasmin is an oral concentrative introduced in 2001 and marketed as a safer "fourth-generation" form of birth control. Yaz was developed by Bayer and introduced in 2006. It was originally marketed for the added benefits of controlling acne and preventing symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

However, Yasmin and Yaz were not as safe as touted. They have been linked to:

  • Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT (blood clots in the legs)
  • Pulmonary embolism, or PE (blood clots in the lungs)
  • Cardiac arrhythmia and cardiac arrest
  • Other serious side effects

Nearly 200 deaths have been attributed to Yaz/Yasmin and thousands of other women have suffered strokes, edema, heart attacks and other life-threatening reactions. In many cases, these side effects occurred shortly after women stopped taking the contraceptive. Ironically, many women stopped taking Yaz and Yasmin after the FDA forced the manufacturer to clarify its disclosures about the risks — a case of too little too late.
